Steel is the most common building material for industrial plants, ships, offshore structures, power plants, sewage and water works and so forth. With their costs escalating rapidly with inflation, the long time protection of such structures is necessary. Corrosion behaviour of some uncoated and polymer coated steel in tap and saline water environments have been studied in the laboratory by electro chemical experiments.
Finally capabilities of coating and coating system for the long time protection of the structures are reported.

Maintaining pipeline integrity is critical for continued safe operation of distribution and transmission systems in water, oil, gas and other sectors. Multiple choices of materials present a challenge for Corrosion Engineer and Integrity Managers. Pipeline Operators need information of the coating systems suitable for various environments and situations. Corrosion resistant organic coatings are the high performance materials that give long term protection to various atmospheres. Some such coatings now in use in industry need evaluation before recommending their use in industrial situation.
An attempt has been made to study steel samples coated with different coating materials, viz coal tar enamel, hot applied coal tar tape, high build epoxy, coal tar epoxy, polyurethanes & cold applied PE tape in tap and sea water environment to fed out their corrosion characteristics and suitability in specific environment.
